Records Relating to Amelia Earhart

The Operational Archives Branch of the Naval Historical Center has placed the following records relating to Amelia Earhart on microfilm. Current price for microfilm duplication is indicated on the Naval Historical Center fee schedule. To order film copies, please indicate the reel numbers wanted on the duplication order form, and send a check or money order for the appropriate amount, made payable to the Department of the Navy to the Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center, 805 Kidder Breese Street SE, Washington, DC 20374-5060. For overseas orders, please include an international check or money order with the order.

Except when noted, the original documents are held by the Civil and Old Military Branch, National Archives and Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20408 (202- 501-5385). However, the Operational Archives Branch has paper copies of all these records which are available to researchers in that office's research room weekdays, except for Wednesdays and federal holidays from 0900 to 1600 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m. )

Reel NRS-246-A contains:

U.S. Navy, Fourteenth Naval District serial 095 of 31 July 1937, Subject File GU, Box 116, Record Group 45 (Collection of Naval Records and Library), National Archives. (96 pages) Forwarded the basic Earhart search report, covering the period 2-18 July 1937.

Department of the Navy, Messages and Correspondence, File A4-5(5), Box 146, Record Group 80 (General Records of the Department of the Navy), National Archives. (106 pages) Covers the period 31 October 1936 to 21 October 1938.

Reel NRS-246-B contains:

Department of the Navy correspondence, Confidential File A21-5, Box 100, Record Group 80 (General Records of the Department of the Navy), National Archives. (20 pages)
Concerns the proposed flight and covers the period 16 October 1936 to 11 May 1937.

Reel NRS-246-C contains:

U.S. Coast Guard records, Record Group 26, National Archives. (505 pages)
Includes correspondence and messages; Pan American Airways report; Earhart plane flight; and the transcript of USCGC Itasca log for July 1937. These documents cover the period 2 July 1937 to May 1938.

Reel NRS-246-D contains:

Office of Naval Intelligence, Naval Investigative Service File, Amelia Earhart Collection, Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center. (360 pages)
Includes the records of official naval investigations into allegations regarding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and a copy of the Fourteenth Naval District report of the search for Earhart by U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard Units.

Reel NRS-246-E contains:

U.S. Navy, Fourteenth Naval District serial 17527 of 3 December 1948, Amelia Earhart Collection, Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center. (487 pages) Forwarded the search plan and dispatch reports related to the search for Amelia Earhart for the period 1-25 July 1937.

Reel NRS-246-F contains:

Messages and correspondence relating to Amelia Earhart's around the world flight, Fleet Maintenance Division of Chief of Naval Operations, Amelia Earhart Collection, Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center. (258 pages)
File covers the period 20 October 1936 to 2 March 1938.

Reel NRS-246-G contains:

Miscellaneous Folder, Amelia Earhart Collection, Operational Archives Branch, Naval Historical Center. (149 pages)
Includes news clips, miscellaneous correspondence, a copy of a 1967 manuscript by Paul Briand Jr., "Requiem for Amelia," and copies of documents donated by Francis X. Holbrook. Documents cover period 1961-1970
