Bombardier Aerospace launches Global 5000 business jetMontréal, February 05, 2002
Bombardier Aerospace today officially launched its high-speed Bombardier Global 5000* intercontinental business jet, designed specifically to meet emerging needs in the super-large jet market.
Since its market introduction in October of 2001, the Bombardier Global 5000 jet is generating positive market interest worldwide, resulting in letters of intent for 15 aircraft.
"In designing the Bombardier Global 5000, Bombardier's 12th new aircraft in 12 years, our goal is to continue developing products that address new market needs. We listen to the market and provide customers with aircraft that offer the latest technological developments and design features at a competitive price," stated Peter Edwards, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft. "The positive market reaction we have witnessed to date for the Bombardier Global 5000 indicates we are right on track."
The Bombardier Global 5000 program is currently in development, with first flight scheduled for the first quarter of 2003. Type certification to stringent regulations from Transport Canada, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Joint Aviation Authorities is on target for the first quarter of 2004. The aircraft is expected to enter corporate service at the end of that year.
Providing the widest and most spacious cabin among super-large business jets,
the Bombardier Global 5000 is capable of flying non-stop from Continental Europe to central North America at Mach 0.85 with eight passengers and three crew. Designed to execute transcontinental missions at a brisk Mach 0.88 - faster than any competing jet - it will fly executives and government leaders to and from airfields closer to their point of business than any widebody business jet.
"The Bombardier Global Express® platform has many advantages, particularly for operators of mixed fleets," added Mr. Edwards. "Operators purchasing both the Bombardier Global Express and the Global 5000 will, for the first time, be able to realize the significant benefits and cost effectiveness derived from fleet and systems commonality."
With a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 87,700 pounds (39,783 kg), the Bombardier Global 5000 will offer a maximum range of 4,800 nautical miles (8,889 km) at a speed of Mach 0.85. Also, at a speed of Mach 0.88, the aircraft will travel 3,700 nautical miles (6,852 km).
The Bombardier Global 5000 was developed after an intensive 24-month market research program. It will offer speed, takeoff and landing performance and sophisticated systems that are similar to those delivered by its parent, the Bombardier Global Express. It will compete in the super-large jet segment which, according to industry forecasts, will require some 750 aircraft by the year 2010.
As it has with previous aircraft development programs, Bombardier is teaming with international risk-sharing participants to design and produce critical components and aircraft systems.
To date, Bombardier Aerospace has selected Rolls-Royce Deutschland to supply the BR710A2-20 powerplant, which is produced at the company's Dahlewitz facility near Berlin, Germany, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) of Nagoya, Japan, for the detail design, manufacturing and integration of the wing section and center fuselage.
Bombardier Aerospace is on target to finalize more systems and structural suppliers in the coming weeks.
The launch price for a typically equipped Bombardier Global 5000 is $32.95 million U.S. and will offer such features as a Central Aircraft Information and Maintenance System (CAIMS), a telephone and fax, a Satellite Communications (SATCOM) system, a third VHF and a datalink.
