Riverside Airport Gala Fly-In!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2002 News Release Announcement

Wichita, KS - A Wichita Aviation Landmark turns 50. Riverside Airport located at 3414 North Hoover Road, Wichita, Kansas celebrates its "Golden Jubilee" on Saturday, October 5th, 2002.

This historical Wichita airport has been host to celebrated aviation notables over the years. "Rip" Gooch, former Tuskegee Airman of World War 2 fame and current Kansas Senator, was the second pilot to land at Riverside in January 1952. And nationally prominent Clay Lacy of Clay Lacy Aviation was a frequent airport visitor prior to leaving Wichita. Rod Machado, national aviation consultant/flight instructor/author, shot a portion of an American Bonanza Society Pilot Proficiency training video at Riverside. The airport was originally established along the east bank if the Arkansas River at 29th and Meridian. During the 30's the owner was Maude Beech, sister of famous Walter Beech. The airport was purchased by Orville Sanders, archery and golf champion, who went on to develop the airport, moved to the West Side of the river and restored Stearman Trainer's. Orville's son, Tom Sanders, local architect has owned and operated Riverside Airport for nearly 30 years.

The celebration October 5th includes a family "open-house" picnic with hamburgers and hotdogs, serving lunch from 11AM - 3PM. Visitors will see antique aircraft, helicopters, radio controlled model airplane races, spot landings and flour bombings. Additionally, the local EAA Chapter of Young Eagles will host airplane rides.

Earlier in the year, Riverside Airport received a matching grant from Mike Armour, Director of Kansas Aviation, Division of KDOT, to resurface and extend the runways and taxiways.

All pilots flying in to Riverside Airport (K32) will land on the 3200' X 40' north/south runway. Traffic should approach east of the runway on Unicom 122.8. Mr. Sanders now has all new, full runway lights for evening/nighttime flying. There is a special on 100LL avgas this day only.

For more information call Tom Sanders at 316-942-6198.
